Drawing

Updated: May 1

Welcome to My Blog!

With permission from one of my lovely clients I’d like to share what we have been doing in their sessions. To keep things confidential I shall call her Faye.

Every week or so, we sit down together and draw beautiful flowers they’ve purchased or picked from the garden.

I’m not an artist by any stretch, but when we’re drawing for fun, with no restrictions, no rules, no judgement, we both can honestly say it feels relaxing. It clears our minds and we begin to focus on the object in front of us.

Drawing flowers, pencils, colouring pencils

As we sit and draw we talk about the difficulty of the shapes, we laugh at why we’re giving ourselves such a challenge, and laugh at the mess we sometimes make on the paper, wondering how we’ll fix it.

Faye and I decided to share with you all our drawings, Mine are in the centre and Faye's is on the right.

Interestingly my most challenging one is one I feel turned out the best for me – the Lilly. Hopefully you can see progression through the pictures, which although wasn’t our aim, gives us the sense of accomplishment. Each week the shading gets a bit easier and the freedom of drawing how we like increases. Both of our styles are so different and we marvel at how the other person see’s things.

The aim of all the sessions I provide is to accommodate the client’s needs. Sometimes we don’t draw at all, we sit and talk with pencil in hand and before we realise, an hour has passed without the pencil touching the paper. But that’s ok, because a chat is what was needed that day.

To finish - A note of a memory

As I write this I realise as children we’d draw so much, I remember back then when I was younger, I wouldn’t really worry about what others thought. I wonder when the time came I decided to stop drawing, I suppose it would be because of the type of school lessons I had would change, instead of drawing I’d learn to write. Perhaps that’s the reason we are embarrassed to draw or show others what we try to draw, because we all learnt to draw our emotions and situations before we could write them.

Do you remember those old school tea towels where you’d attempt to draw yourself? And you’re parents would keep the memorabilia of scribbled child faces, looking like all different characters from the muppets or something, they’re so fun to look back on. Maybe I’ll put a drawing on my fridge, to make people smile at how brave I am to show off such a monstrous thing.

Much Love x
